Away shirt as worn in a season of change at St. James’ Park. Club hero Bobby Robson saw his five-year tenure brought to an abrupt end as he was sacked in late August and eventually replaced with Graeme Souness. The Scotsman was unable to mount a Champions League challenge and the Magpies slipped to 14th place. They did however enjoy a run to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup where Sporting Lisbon overturned a 1-0 deficit to progress 4-2 on aggregate.
